Causes Of High Risk Pregnancy

Preexisting health conditions:

There are several health conditions which cause risk in pregnancy and these have existed in a woman’s body from the past. These might include:

High blood pressure:

High blood pressure is risky, having a mild one could not affect the mother or the unborn baby.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS):

Any woman dealing with PCOS is prone to pregnancy loss before 20 weeks of pregnancy, diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes), preeclampsia, and cesarean section.

Diabetes:

The blood sugar level of a pregnant woman is an essential element to deal with pregnancy and thus a woman dealing with the same must have to maintain this before and during pregnancy. Birth defects could be caused due to high blood sugar levels in the beginning of the pregnancy when the woman is not even sure about her pregnancy.

Kidney disease:

Healthy pregnancy could be expected from a woman dealing with mild kidney disease.

Thyroid disease:

Poor weight gain, and brain development problems could also be the results of thyroid.

Pregnancy-related health conditions

There are various risky pregnancy related health conditions which could prove to be risky for the unborn child or mother.

Multiple gestation:

The mother when carrying twins or triplets could give birth to abnormal babies. Cesarean section is most commonly seen in women giving birth to more than one baby, difficulty in breathing could be seen in infants who are born prematurely.

Gestational diabetes:

When a woman who was not having any symptoms of diabetes develops it during her pregnancy it is termed as gestational diabetes. Preterm labor and delivery, and high blood pressure could be a result of gestational diabetes.

Preeclampsia and eclampsia

A sudden increase in the woman’s blood pressure after the 20th week of pregnancy is termed as Preeclampsia. This could cause issues in the mother’s kidneys, liver, and brain. This could also lead to coma.

Age:

Age is also an important aspect in the pregnancy and it could lead to risk during pregnancy.

Young age:

Pregnancy-related high blood pressure and anemia (lack of healthy red blood cells) is more likely to occur in pregnant teens. Sexually transmitted infection (STI) is also seen in teens and mostly they are not even aware of this. And due to lack of prenatal care or to keep prenatal appointments the pregnancy of teens is at risk. The evaluation, identification and treatment of risk is really important and in teens due to lack of prenatal care these all factors are not addressed carefully.

First-time pregnancy after age 35:

As compared to young age mothers the older ones have high risk in pregnancy.

Lifestyle:

Your lifestyle might look the best to you and you love to live in your way but how your way could affect you body and the child which is being born inside you is something you are unaware of. Some of the factors of high risk pregnancy are:

Alcohol:

In the present scenario many women have the habit of consuming alcohol and this might be a part of their regular life. Baby’s risk for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), sudden infant death syndrome, and other problems gets increased when a pregnant woman consumes alcohol. Intellectual and developmental disabilities; behavior problems; abnormal facial features; and disorders of the heart, kidneys, bones, and hearing are some of the results seen.

Tobacco:

Risk for preterm birth, certain birth defects, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) might be the results of smoking during the pregnancy period. After 20 weeks of pregnancy the unborn baby’s death is most likely seen due to the consumption of tobacco.

Durg:

Infant health could be affected by the intake of marijuana and drugs. Smoking marijuana during pregnancy can interfere with normal brain development in the fetus, possibly causing long-term problems.
