Do you remember the first time you got your periods? That was the time of menarche for you. The first menstruation in life is called menarche which is one of the signs of puberty.
Biological changes in the bodies of boys or girls, who are about to enter puberty is quite natural. Menstruation is a very important phase of a woman’s life. And when the menstrual cycle is normal and periodic it's the sign that the girl is healthy. Depending upon the lifestyle and diet of different girls the menarche might appear late or early. And at this age the parents must take care of the diet of the girl.

From ancient times Ayurveda advises special regimes during these special times which can help to improve the health of mother and child in coming years. They are also important in the prevention and management of complications of pregnancy and childbirth, postnatal depression, etc.

Garbhini Paricharya:

Prenatal care is known as “garbhini paricharya” in Ayurveda. ‘Garbhini’ means pregnant woman and ‘paricharya’ means ideal protocol. The guidelines for prenatal care start even before conception. The couple planning to have a progeny shall follow purification procedures (panchakarma), proper diet and lifestyle modifications as part of preconception care. Ayurveda considers food to be the best source of nourishment as well as medication for the pregnant woman. The nine monthly diet is singularly unique to Ayurveda (masanumasik). It changes in accordance with the growth of the fetus in the womb and at the same time ensures the health of the mother.

Sutika Paricharya includes mainly three parts Ahara (Diet), Vihar (Lifestyle), and Aushadi (Postnatal visit and Medicines).

Menopause

The end to a woman’s menstrual cycle and ovulations is termed as menopause. Occasionally menopause might be viewd as an end to a woman’s youth and sexuality. This is not any kind of disease, it's an effect of the growing age of the woman. This natural transformation is generally viewed at the age of 45 to 55 years. This can cause irritation, mood swings and make a woman annoyed in a manner and are the basic symptoms of the arrival of menopause.

The main deal now is how to deal with menopause and the symtoms and here ayurveda proves to be of great help. Ayurveda presciribes diets for woman who are going through the stage of menopause.

Ayurvedic detox (Panchakarma) for menopause

Panchakarma is the process of removing toxins from the body. Ayurvedic physicians tailor panchakarma according to the state of the patient’s doshas.

* Medicated ghee is orally administered for a few days to prepare the stubborn toxins (ama).

* Medicated purgation (Virechana) is very effective in calming down the aggravated pitta doshas and blood tissues.

* Medicated enemas (Basti) are administered for calming down the aggravated vata doshas and apana vata which become disordered during menopause.

* Medicated nasal oil (Nasya) helps with the symptoms of the mind and head.

* Pouring herbal oil or decoction over the scalp (Shirodhara) is an effective therapy for calming the nervous system and balancing the neuro-transmitters.
